A 13-year-old girl is in Hawke's Bay hospital with serious leg injuries after she was run over during a street fight involving machetes and golf clubs in Hastings.
Police were called to Kiwi Street in Camberley just before 5pm yesterday when a fight broke out between four youths. The situation escalated when other people became involved and weapons such as golf clubs and machetes were brought out.
Detective Senior Sergeant Dave de Lange says a car was driven into the group of people who were fighting, hitting the teenager.
A 15-year-old has been charged with serious assault.
Police want to speak with a large group of people who watched the fight. Detective Senior Sergeant de Lange says the scene attracted a lot of attention.
He says it is a residential area, with a shopping centre nearby so there were plenty of passers-by.
