A teenage boy was released on bail today after his first court appearance over the shooting death of a 20-year-old woman in Northland.
The teenager was charged with careless use of a firearm after the woman died at a rural property at Okaihau, about 90km northwest of Whangarei, last night.
He appeared in the Youth Court at Kaikohe today and was released on bail by Judge Sarah Lindsay to appear again on February 15.
The teenager's name and the name of the woman who died were suppressed.
Earlier today Inspector Chris Scahill, police area commander, said the death was a tragic reminder of how dangerous guns can be.
"This death did not need to happen," said Mr Scahill.
"This incident is yet again a timely reminder of the need to be extremely careful in the carriage and use of firearms."
Mr Scahill said initial police inquiries indicated it was an accidental shooting.
"However, a full investigation continues.
"It is a shocking tragedy for everybody connected with this incident and today a family mourns their loss."
Three ambulances raced to the isolated property between Kaikohe and Kerikeri but paramedics could do little to help the woman.
Local residents have been told by police not to talk about the shooting.
