A teenager was punched in the head and robbed as he walked home from a friend's house in Johnsonville about 11.30pm last night.
The first blow knocked the 17-year-old to the ground. As he tried to stand up, the robber punched him again, demanding money.
After handing over a small amount of cash, the youth managed to flee his attacker, who was momentarily distracted , Wellington Detective Constable Matt Wasson said.
The teenager was shaken but not seriously injured in the Bannister Avenue assault.
Mr Wasson described the attacker as a male Maori or Polynesian, about 16 to 21-years-old. He was stocky and about 1.80m tall, with black hair and a black messy moustache. The man was wearing a white cap and a long hooded puffer jacket.
Mr Wassan appealed for anyone who saw the incident or a person matching the description in the area to contact him.
