A teenage boy pulled the battery from a crashed car to stop it being restarted as petrol spilled around the smashed vehicle.
The sedan was involved in a collision with another vehicle which resulted in a six-year-old boy being rushed to hospital. He was taken to Starship Children's Hospital in Auckland with critical injuries after the Monday night accident in Hillcrest on the North Shore.
The boy remained in a stable condition last night.
The child was understood to be travelling with his mother and father when the Pupuke Rd accident happened. He was thrown from the vehicle.
Neighbours have described hearing the loud impact of the crash, followed by the mother's hysterical screams of, "My baby, my baby".
One resident, who wished not to be named, said her 17-year-old son was
one of the first on the scene.
