A 14-year-old boy was airlifted to hospital from a remote forest hut last night after an accident on a school trip.
The Tauranga-based Trustpower TECT Rescue Helicopter was dispatched to the Waitawheta Hut in the Upper Kaimai Range, south of Karangahake Gorge, when a personal location transmitter went off about 8pm.
It is believed the teen -- a Year 9 student at Mahurangi College in Warkworth -- had suffered a medical problem as a result of an accident earlier in the week while staying at the hut as part of a school camp.
"The boy had a leg injury and was flown to Tauranga Hospital for further treatment," a spokesman for TECT Rescue Helicopter said, "He was with a group of other kids from his school who were staying at the hut and it was serious enough to call in an aircraft."
