A teenager has been remanded on bail and four others also face charges following a police pursuit through Dunedin that went for 46km and reached speeds of up to 135km/h.
The teenager appeared before justices of the peace in Dunedin District Court on Saturday, charged with unlawfully taking a late model Toyota Hilux from Dunedin several hours earlier, dangerous driving, failure to stop and theft from a car.
He was arrested about 2.30am on Saturday following a 46km pursuit from Dunedin to Taieri Mouth, Senior Sergeant Kelvin Lloyd said.
Police allege he was driving a car that reached speeds of up to 135km/h in open speed zones, up to 100km/h in 50km/h-70km/h speed zones, ran red lights and crossed centre lines with "serious disregard for public safety" during the pursuit.
The pursuit ended when spikes were deployed near Waihola and the car ran over them.
