Police are reporting that a male in his late teens was struck and killed by a north-bound train in the early hours of this morning.
The incident, involving a Kiwi Rail train, occurred in Hinds, Mid Caterbury at about 1.20am.
Police have not yet released the deceased's name until all family members have been notified.
Circumstances of the incident are still being investigated.
