An Aucklander teenager died after two jetskis collided head-on at the Coromandel Peninsula holiday resort of Pauanui yesterday afternoon.
Adam Brown, a 17-year-old student, was driving one of the jetskis.
The driver of the other, another 17-year-old Aucklander, was uninjured.
Senior Sergeant Kristy Meates, of Pauanui police, said the young men knew each other.
Mr Brown was taken ashore, but did not respond to CPR.
Ms Meates said Mr Brown showed no signs of injury and the cause of his death had yet to be established.
He and his family had been holidaying in Pauanui.
"His parents and everybody involved is just devastated," she said.
Ms Meates urged other jetskiers to "please take care" over the holidays.
Mr Brown's death is New Zealand's seventh jetski fatality since 1997.
Tairua harbourmaster Wayne Price said about 30 jetskiers and 20 boats towing waterskiers were enjoying a full tide in the harbour at the time of the accident.
