An 18-year-old Waimate man is dead following a collision between a car and a horse truck on a bridge about 20km north of Oamaru this afternoon.
The man was a passenger in the car, which was heading south on State Highway 1 when involved in the collision, at the north end of the Waitaki River bridge about 12.20pm, said Senior Constable Clint Vallender of Waimate police.
The driver of the car, also 18 and from Waimate, was flown to Dunedin Hospital with serious injuries.
The truck ended up on its side. The two occupants were injured but two horses on board were not.
The cause of the crash had yet to be determined, Mr Vallender said.
Police wanted to speak to a woman in a grey or white car who may have been near the crash when it happened. She left the scene before police could talk to her.
The crash brings to 22 the number killed on the roads in the week since the start of the Easter holidays.
