KEY POINTS:
The teenager killed in a high-speed crash in the Bay of Plenty has been named by police.
He was Tristan Lance Matutaera Mike Eruera, 18, of Te Teko, who was a passenger.
The car he was in crashed off the Te Teko highway into a paddock in Edgecumbe, near Whakatane, about 7am yesterday.
The 16-year-old driver ran from the scene but was tracked down.
Police said the crash involved the hallmarks of dangerous driving including alcohol, speeding and a breach of licence conditions and no wearing of seatbelts.
