Police have confirmed a Central Hawkes Bay teenager was killed last night after his car rolled down a steep bank near Ongaonga.
Senior Constable Cory Ubels said the 16-year-old who died had been driving the car, which left the road just after 8pm, 5-kilometres west of Waipawa.
His 18-year-old passenger was flown to Hawke's Bay Hospital by Lowe Corporation Rescue Helicopter from the crash site.
Mr Ubels said it was too early to know how the accident occurred.
"All we know is the car has driven off the road and down a very steep bank," he said. Road conditions were dry and there was a light breeze at the time, he said.
