A 16-year-old boy jumped for his life from a window of a house on fire in Northland at 8.45pm last night.
The boy lived close to the Melody Lane house, noticed the fire and went inside to try to put it out.
However the flames were too big so he smashed a first floor window to get out.
Fire northern communications team manager Jaron Phillips said the boy escaped with cuts to his arm.
