KEY POINTS:
A teenager is in Whangarei Hospital with serious head injuries following a vehicle crash in Northland early this morning.
The 18-year-old was taken to hospital after the car he was driving collided with a truck on State Highway 14 near Maungatapere, 12km southwest of Whangarei, about 4.30am.
Acting Sergeant Mike Greenwood of Whangarei police said the truck driver escaped injury.
State Highway 14 was closed following the crash and was reopened about 10.30am.
