KEY POINTS:
A Hawkes Bay family is waiting anxiously for any signs of improvement in the condition of their 17-year-old son who now lies in an induced coma.
He was hit by a car while he was walking along State Highway 2 near Clive early this morning.
The woman driver of the car, who was unhurt, contacted emergency services and administered CPR until they arrived, police said.
It was not known why the youth was standing in the road or how far into the road he was.
Sergeant Corey Ubels of the Serious Crash Unit says the youth is now in a serious but stable condition, and will have surgery on his legs today.
He has swelling in his brain from a head injury after hitting the windscreen of the car.
Sergeant Ubels says it is not yet known whether charges will be laid against the driver.
