KEY POINTS:
A 16-year-old appeared in Counties Manukau Youth Court yesterday after a female police officer pursuing an armed dairy robber was viciously beaten on Monday.
The drama began when the officer responded to an emergency call from the Tiraumea Superette in Pakuranga's Tiraumea Drive.
After a tip-off, the officer and a male colleague turned up at the alleged robber's house, but he fled.
When the policewoman tried to stop the teen, he straddled her and bashed her several times in the face.
He also attacked her partner.
Their injuries were not as serious as first thought, police said yesterday.
Counties Manukau East police area commander Jim Searle said the woman suffered scratching to the cornea of her eyes, and substantial bruising but no broken bones.
Her partner had his hand broken.
The boy was charged with aggravated robbery, aggravated wounding and two counts of assaulting police.
