A teenager has been referred to Youth Aid for supplying false information to police investigating the murder of Manawatu farmer Scott Guy.
Mr Guy was gunned down in the driveway of his Feilding property as he was on his way to milking cows early on July 8 and police have so far struggled to make any headway in their investigation.
A 16 year-old had been referred to youth aid after falsely telling officers he had worked at the end of Mr Guy's road and travelled past the dead man's house each morning, inquiry head Detective Inspector Sue Schwalger told the Dominion Post.
"It's disheartening for the team and investigators who are putting a lot of time and effort into this investigation because they really want to solve it."
The boy is the second to feed false information to the investigation, after Manawatu Prison inmate Shaun Francis Whittaker told police he could name a friend who confessed to shooting a man.
The 34 year-old was sentenced to three months' jail and ordered to pay $8545.10 for misleading police.
At the weekend, Mr Guy's widow made a public plea for information as the family prepares for their first Christmas without Mr Guy.
Kylee Guy is now the single mother of two-year-old Hunter and three-month-old Drover - who was born after his father was killed.
Knowing her husband would not be there to watch Hunter open presents and share the joy on his face was the most heartbreaking of all, Mrs Guy said.
"Hunter is now getting ready for Christmas and is so excited that Santa is coming. Hunter still thinks Daddy is coming home. He talks about him all the time and every night he always says "love you my daddy" and blows him kisses.
"Drover is so beautiful. He is now three months old and is a blueprint of his father. Scotty would be so, so proud of himself for creating such a perfect little man."
Mr Guy's 32nd birthday would have been today (Tuesday) and Mrs Guy said there was always a party for him.
"He used to love being the birthday boy. He will no longer feel that joy again and that destroys me."
