Caring for animals is the perfect work experience for teenager Anna Patete as she plans for her future career.
The 14-year-old Chanel College student who regularly volunteers at the Wairarapa SPCA has hopes of heading to university in a few years to study to become a veterinarian.
The Times-Age caught up with the teenager during Children's Day at the animal rescue, which hundreds of local families took part in. At the time she was showing young children through the cattery.
"I think it's so neat so many people have come to see the animals. It's good to bring children and animals together."
Anna said a friend had introduced her to the centre about a year ago and now she volunteers weekly to clean up, feed and cuddle the animals waiting for adoption.
