A teenager whose body was found in an alleyway outside a central Wellington apartment block on Sunday morning probably fell to his death, police said today.
Dushan Saddlier Pouao, 18, from Porirua, was found dead outside the Soho Apartments on Egmont St, between Dixon and Ghuznee Streets, about 8.30am on Sunday.
Mr Pouao had been attending a party on the eighth floor of the building before his death.
Detective Inspector Paul Basham said today that the results of a post mortem indicated Mr Pouao fell to his death but police still needed to reconstruct what took place and how he fell.
"This is an important component as we are required to provide the coroner with an assurance that police have thoroughly investigated this matter, which in turn will provide a degree of comfort for the family, as they come to terms with the events of what occurred over the weekend."
Mr Basham said that the exact cause of death would be determined by the coroner.
Mr Pouao's distraught family and friends were taken to the scene before the removal of the body.
Police were looking at CCTV footage from the complex to determine the movements of Mr Pouao and other partygoers.
Mr Basham appealed for any witnesses to come forward.
Friends have left messages of sympathy on Mr Pouao's Facebook page.
