Police later tracked the vehicle using CCTV footage, and observed "extremely dangerous driving" as the car travelled across all lanes and into oncoming traffic while speeding.
The vehicle eventually left the motorway at Te Iririangi Drive, and then entered the motorway again, against the traffic flow, heading north.
This caused a head-on collision with another car under the Reagan Road overbridge.
The female driver of the car that was hit suffered from minor injuries and shock, police said.
Although the driver fled from the scene, police were able to use CCTV footage to find him.
A 16-year-old male youth from South Auckland will appear before the Manukau Youth Court today.
He will face charges of unlawful taking of a motor vehicle, reckless driving, failure to stop for police and failure to ascertain injuries.
Inspector Kerry Watson said "the danger and contempt to other road users exhibited by these criminals is appalling".
"The manner of their driving is likely to cause death or serious injuries if not stopped.
"They adopt dangerous practises such as driving the wrong way on motorway systems in order to influence police to abandon attempts to apprehend them."
Meanwhile, another of the vehicles in the convoy was dumped in Hall Avenue, Otahuhu, before the occupant attempted to run to another stolen vehicle.
A dog handler then tried to track the man down but was unsuccessful.
Police asked for anyone with information to contact them on 09 5712800 or through Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
