Teen driver in fatal crash charged

A 14-year-old teenager has been charged with a raft of driving offences after a crash in Masterton that claimed the lives of two 15-year-old males on Sunday morning.

The Featherston boy appeared in Masterton District Court this morning charged with driving while forbidden, failing to stop for police and unlawfully gets in to a stolen motor vehicle.

He was remanded to the custody of Child, Youth and Family and was due to re-appear on February 11.

Police said further charges may follow.

Acting Wairarapa Area Commander Senior Sergeant Mike Sutton expressed his condolences to those affected by the deaths on Sunday.

"The loss of two young people is always a tragedy. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of all those involved.

"It is important, at this time, that people allow the Police investigation process to run its course.

"We are dealing with extremely vulnerable and emotional young people who are struggling to come to terms with what has happened."
