The identity of a man killed by a train near Tokoroa yesterday remains a mystery, police said today.
The man was killed when he was struck by a train on a crossing.
Police said the man, who was Maori or Polynesian aged in his late teens, was crossing the railway tracks between Kinleith and Tokoroa next to State Highway 1.
Acting Senior Sergeant Greg Standen told NZPA the dead man's fingerprints were not in their computer system, and no-one had filed a missing persons report.
Mr Standen said that police were about to start a door-knocking campaign in the area to try to establish his identity.
"I'd like to get a result on this at the end of the day, otherwise we're probably looking at someone outside of the area," he said.
