The driver of a car that crashed into a pole on Auckland's Mt Wellington Highway last night has died in hospital this morning.
The 18-year-old driver, Kristofer Moon, and three 17-year-old girls were rushed to hospital after they crashed just before midnight yesterday.
Police believe speed and alcohol were factors in the crash, though they were waiting on the results of further tests.
Sergeant Matt Ford, of the Serious Crash Unit, said the girls' injuries were not serious. They were released from hospital this morning.
Police believe the teenagers were coming from a bar in Ellerslie, about two kilometres away, when the crash occurred, he said.
Mr Ford said the crash was at the same spot as another fatal crash three months ago.
Speed and alcohol were factors there, too, he said.
Police investigations are continuing.
