Teen died from fall, not hit and run

Police believe a 17-year-old man found dead in central Auckland this morning fell to his death from the Capitol Theatre.

It was earlier thought he had died in a hit-and-run.

Jesse Moimoi from Avondale was found by police at 6am on Dominion Road.

After a post-mortem examination was completed, officers were advised he died as a result of a fall.

Police spokeswoman Noreen Hegarty said they believe Mr Moimoi fell to his death at about 5.40am.

A witness told police at 6am he heard a "loud thud or thump" about 20 minutes earlier.

Police do not believe it is suspicious at this stage and have spoken to some associates who were with him until about midnight last night.

Police are at the scene of the fall, outside the old Capitol Theatre.

Ms Hegarty said Avondale police would like to hear from anyone who saw anything that might help with the investigation into his death.
