GISBORNE - Police have named a teenage girl killed in a car crash near Gisborne on Friday.
She was Emma Green, 15, of Gisborne.
A 23-year-old man who also died has not been named as relatives overseas are yet to be contacted.
The accident happened on State Highway 2, near Makaraka, about 7km from Gisborne.
The Subaru the pair were travelling in, along with three others, was travelling towards Gisborne about 9.45pm when it overtook another vehicle and struck a small concrete roadside shed, said Senior Sergeant Maui Aben, of Gisborne police.
The three survivors were being treated in Gisborne Hospital.
A 24-year-old man was in a comfortable condition in the intensive care unit and a 19-year-old woman was in a stable condition.
A 14-year-old girl who suffered serious injuries was expected to be transferred to Waikato Hospital for specialist treatment today, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Police are investigating reports the car clipped the other vehicle as it was overtaking.
They are also considering whether speed and alcohol were factors in the crash.
