Teen charged with murder over motorway killing

A 14-year-old Otahuhu boy has appeared in the Youth Court at Manukau charged with murdering Chris Currie.

Detective Senior Sergeant Neil Grimstone told a media conference before the court appearance this morning that the police were looking at further charges.

Mr Grimstone said police would not be charging two people who were with the boy last Friday night when he allegedly threw an 8kg piece of concrete from an Otahuhu overbridge that hurtled through the windscreen of Mr Currie's car, killing him instantly.

The 14-year-old was arrested last night in Manukau after officers investigating the incident got information from a local school. Several members of his family were in the courtroom this morning.

Mr Currie, 20, a King Country age-group rugby player, was travelling to Auckland with three others when the concrete struck his car. The other three received minor injuries when the car crashed off the road.

Mr Currie's funeral is to be held tomorrow.

The 14-year-old was remanded in social welfare custody without plea by Judge David Harvey until September 13.
