A teenager has been charged with murder after the suspicious death of a 23-year-old man in Kawerau yesterday.
Whakatane Police said they had arrested and charged an 18-year-old man with causing his death.
He was due to appear in the Whakatane District Court later today.
Police said they would oppose bail and at this stage were not seeking anyone else.
However, a large team of police would remain on the inquiry.
A fresh appeal was made for information for any suspicious activity between Hill and Whittaker Streets between 11pm on Tuesday and 1.30am Wednesday.

Armed police stood guard as the patched members were led out in handcuffs.
