A teenager who killed his best friend in a west Auckland street race and was banned from driving for three years has allegedly been caught behind the wheel.
Dylan Chad and Calum Elliot admitted charges of manslaughter after their 17-year-old mate Tyler Hoyle was killed while judging the winner of a high-speed drag race in August 2013.
A disagreement over whose car was faster led to the race on Scott Rd in Hobsonville, but the teenager was killed instantly after Elliot's vehicle, travelling at more than 100km/h, hit him as it skidded out of control.
The court heard how Chad, 19, spoke at his best friend's funeral and had been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder after the incident.
Justice Rodney Hansen said the teen was "deeply ashamed" and sentenced him to nine months home detention to be served at his grandparents' Massey address.
