A Hamilton teen fed false information to police investigating the murder of Feilding farmer Scott Guy, a court was told yesterday.
Colin George Jacobs, 18, formerly of Feilding, misled police after seeing an appeal for information on crime show Police Ten 7.
He told investigators he had seen a car parked on a side road near Mr Guy's house the morning of his death.
Jacobs, who now lives in Waikato, appeared in Hamilton District Court yesterday and entered a guilty plea to obstruction, The Waikato Times reported.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Jock Simpson said Jacobs' false tip triggered an extensive follow-up enquiry.
After his arrest, he told officers he felt bad for the Guy family and wanted to give information to help.
Mr Guy, 31, was shot dead in the driveway of his Aorangi Road home on July 8. His brother-in-law Ewen Kerry Macdonald was arrested and charged with murder last month.
Outside court, Jacobs said he was sorry for what he had done and he did not think about how it might hurt the Guy family.
Jacobs was remanded at large for sentencing at a later date.
