The relay teams were outstanding as Team Wairarapa made a bold showing at the first of the central region track and field league meets at Inglewood.
Highlight on Saturday was the effort of April Campbell, Sian Chapman, Laura McKenna and Simone Small to blitz their opposition in the A division of the women's 4 x 100m relay. They won in a slick 50.92 seconds despite not having practised together.
Wairarapa also won in the women's B division, where Molly Creagh, Monique Dalley, Andrea Williams and Sam Hodgins recorded 56.38s, while the men's 4 x 400m team of Edward Hewitt, Tom Quinn, Dhruv Raman and Dillon Lord-Bune exceeded expectations with their time of 3min 45s.
Small won the women's 100m in 12.91s, into a head wind, and Chapman (13.55s) and Campbell (13.63s) also had reason to be pleased. Makoura College's Alex Howden was second in his 100m grade in 12.26s. Small was pipped in 27.22s in the women's 200m, with Chapman clocking 28.45s and Campbell 29.36s. Howden won his men's event in a splendid 24.82s.
Creagh was third in the women's A division 400m in 61.25s, while McKenna ran 72.44s. Edward Hewitt ran 54.32s in the men's 400m, Raman 54.90s and Lord-Bune 59.41s. Keelan Ward and George Hewitt shone in the athletes with a disability section, Ward clocking 71.11s and Hewitt 96.48s.
