Wairarapa's Relay For Life launched on Thursday night at the Clareville Showgrounds, the new venue for the overnight walking event to raise funds for the Cancer Society.
The event involves teams, including cancer survivors and caregivers, taking turns to walk through an afternoon and night, to remember those who have been lost to cancer.
It takes place every two years, with next year's event on March 21-22.
Reverend Mihi Namana blessed the launch as about 40 organisers, teams and cancer survivors gathered inside the Clareville Hockey complex.
Acting Carterton Mayor John Booth said he had lost his father to cancer in 2003.
