They may not be big in numbers but Wairarapa are expected to make big waves at the New Zealand junior swimming championships in Wellington this weekend.
In total, there will be 15 Wairarapa youngsters in action and Swim Wairarapa general secretary Maryann Corrigan is confident the province will, as usual, punch above its weight.
She said most of the Wairarapa contingent were ranked highly in their respective events and, if they performed up to their best standards, several of them could be among the medal winners.
"I suppose you could say we are very much the diamonds in the rough on the national stage. We seldom fail to hold our own, despite the limited resources we have," Corrigan said.
For the first time in several years, Wairarapa are fielding three regional relay teams. They will field A and B teams in the girls freestyle and medley relays, and one boys team will compete in those events as well.
