KEY POINTS:
The country's biggest teacher union said yesterday it had adjourned contract talks with the Ministry of Education.
The New Zealand Educational Institute, which represents 27,000 primary teachers, said the sticking point was not the ministry's 4 per cent base pay rise offer but the "lack of financial recognition" given to teachers with extra duties.
It said pay parity would retain and reward experienced teachers and could avert a predicted teacher supply crisis.
