Teachers are set to be stung with an increase in their annual registration fee from $70 to about $170.
The Education Council of Aotearoa New Zealand (Educanz) will shortly consult with unions and the education sector on the proposed fee increase.
Council chief executive Dr Graham Stoop revealed the proposed fee hike to Parliament's education committee today.
He acknowledged it was significant, but was the first since 2010 and was needed to cover the expanded functions of the council.
The proposed fee of about $170 was also reasonable compared to other professions, Stoop said.
