KEY POINTS:
Secondary school teachers have called off strike action planned for Wednesday.
Post Primary Teachers Association president Robin Duff said the association's executive had decided there had been sufficient improvement in the offer from the Ministry of Education to continue pay talks.
He said most of the substantive issues had been resolved during negotiations at the weekend and talks would continue this week to sort out some of the details.
"The parties are hopeful that a settlement can be finalised soon."
The teachers were seeking improved pay and conditions, with a pay increase of 7.5 per cent over one year.
Secretary for Education Karen Sewell said she was delighted with the decision to call off the planned strike.
"I am extremely grateful to the PPTA and Ministry of Education negotiators for all the hard work they have put in to reach this outcome.
"The decision not to strike is a good one, and talks will continue this week in an environment of good faith and co-operation.
"We both hope a settlement will be finalised soon."
