A Napier teacher has been fired after it was revealed he had an affair with a schoolgirl.
Hawke's Bay Today reported today that it understood the William Colenso College teacher had a relationship with a 16-year-old pupil.
The school was alerted to the fact after a parent complained.
In a statement, the school said a male teacher had been dismissed over actions amounting to "serious misconduct", following a board of trustees meeting on October 2.
Board chairman Don Clarke would not confirm the teacher's identity but said serious misconduct could mean a whole range of things, including endangering pupils' safety and wellbeing.
Napier detective Dean Young, who works in the child abuse team, told the newspaper police were aware of the case but no offence had been committed and no charges would be laid.
