A Napier teacher was fired for having an emotional attachment with a 16-year-old girl student, the school board has said.
The William Colenso College teacher was sacked on October 2 for serious misconduct over the relationship, which board chairman Don Clark yesterday characterised as an "emotional bond".
The affair came to light when a parent complained.
"Upon investigation it became clear that this bond had extended into the private lives of both the teacher and the student," Mr Clark said. "There was no evidence of a sexual relationship."
Police have said no charges are to be laid.
