The Teachers' Council is waiting to receive a report from an elite Christchurch school after a male teacher had an affair with a senior student.
Rangi Ruru Girls'; School Principal Julie Moor says the school became aware of the consensual association by rumours circulating the school community.
The teacher has since resigned from his position at the school.
Ms Moor says while the staff member may not have acted illegally, his behaviour is unacceptable and a breach of trust for the entire school community.
In situations such as this reporting to the Teachers'; Council is mandatory.
Council director Peter Lind says the report has not been received yet however once it is, the facts will be considered by the Complaints Assessment Committee and if it meets the criteria for serious misconduct it will be referred to the disciplinary tribunal.
He says inappropriate relationships do meet the threshold of serious misconduct.
