KEY POINTS:
A New Zealand-born former teacher has been charged with indecently assaulting pupils at an exclusive Sydney school.
Barrie Tiffin Stewart, 71, faces four counts of indecently assaulting two boys aged 10 and 12 in 1984 and 1987 while working at Knox Grammar.
The Presbyterian Church founded the school in 1924 and actors Hugh Jackman and Hugo Weaving are among its alumni.
Police said Stewart moved to Australia in the 1950s or 60s and spent 30 years at Knox teaching music and coaching tennis. He retired in 2000 and volunteers at a nursing home, where he plays piano for the residents.
Stewart appeared in the Hornsby Local Court on Wednesday and was remanded on bail. His passport was confiscated, and he was ordered to report to police regularly until his next court appearance next month.
Inspector Michael Banfield of Ku-ring-gai police said Stewart could face further charges. A special unit has been set up to investigate the abuse claims.
Another Knox teacher is also facing charges. Craig Howard Treloar, 49, is charged with sexually assaulting and indecently assaulting an 11-year-old boy and the 12-year-old Stewart is charged over.
