Teacher de-registered for student relationship

A teacher who crept into the bedroom where a student was sleeping in his house and kissed her has been de-registered.

The male teacher, who was granted name suppression, admitted having an inappropriate relationship with the Year 13 pupil in September last year.

He was charged with serious misconduct by the Teachers Council after the relationship came to light.

The teacher, who was married with children, was also spotted by other students kissing the girl in a classroom.

In evidence given to the council, he was found to have invited the pupil to stay over at his home when his wife was away, and during that time held her by the shoulders and rested his chin on her head.

A week later the teen babysat for his children, she slept overnight at the house and the next morning he went into the bedroom where she was sleeping and kissed her.

When he drove the girl to her friend's house later that day, he pulled over to the side of the road where they kissed for five to 10 minutes and he felt her breasts under her clothes, the council decision said.

Two days after this encounter he attempted to break it off with the pupil until she finished school, because he was due to appear before the Board of Trustees at the unnamed school.

In a text message he told the girl, "I love you so much", and said he would deny to the board that he told her he "wanted to make love to you".

"I can't save my job but I might save my career," he said. "Be well. None of this is your fault. Concentrate on your exams, my darling."

The text included a number of kisses.

Brought before the Teachers Council the man, who qualified as a teacher in 2005, admitted the relationship and that it constituted serious misconduct. He was censured and removed from the teachers register.
