Former national senior and age group representative Andrew Taylor made an auspicious debut for Wairarapa United in their pre-season men's soccer match with Hutt Valley at Howard Booth Park, Carterton on Saturday, a game won by Wairarapa United 4-1.
Playing in the midfield Taylor not only scored a spectacular goal from a volley but used his experience to telling effect on both attack and defence
The Wairarapa United win was unexpected with Hutt Valley having beaten them twice the previous season and being promoted to Capital Soccer's premier league but it was thoroughly deserved.
Even without a couple of key players in their forward line they constantly troubled the Hutt Valley defence while their own defensive systems worked well.
"Yes, it was a really pleasing all-round performance," Wairarapa United coach Phil Keinzley said. " As much as anything it showed we have good depth in the side, and that's always a huge plus."
Left half Carl Shailer was named player of the match for Wairarapa United and others to shine were defenders Andy Robertson, Evan Shailer and Paul Watkinson and midfielder Murray Burling, who played at national league level for Manawatu over the summer months
Goal scorers for Wairarapa United were Carl Shailer (2), Andrew Taylor and Pita Rabo. They will complete their preparation for the Capital division one competition with a "friendly' against another premier league side, University, at Howard Booth Park next Saturday.
