Central midfielder Andy Taylor was in dynamic form as Wairarapa United came from behind to beat Naenae 3-2 in their Capital division one soccer match played at Howard Booth Park in Carterton on Saturday.
The win maintained Wairarapa United's second place on the competition table, three points adrift of Western Suburbs.
And with third placed Lower Hutt being held to a draw by Miramar on Saturday Wairarapa United have a four point "cushion" on them.
Taylor, a former national senior and age group representative, starred on both attack and defence and played a huge part in Wairarapa United recovering from trailing 0-1 and later 1-2 to win by 3-2.
With Naenae fielding three players-two strikers and a midfielder- who have played professionally in England they were always likely to cause problems for the Wairarapa United defence, but with Taylor marshalling the troops they came through a hard match with flying colours.
"They (Naenae) did open us up at times, but generally we were able to keep them pretty well under wraps", Wairarapa United coach Phil Keinzley said. "Andy's work ethic was a huge plus for us???his commitment was absolutely outstanding."
Two of the Wairarapa United goals were scored by Fijian Peta Rabo and he too had had an impressive game, especially in the last 20 minutes when he continually tormented the Naenae defence.
Pleasing too for Wairarapa United was the form of Murray Burling who has had more than his share of injury problems this season. He lasted the whole game on this occasion and his organisation and composure midfield was always evident.
Coach Keinzley described the game as one of the toughest Wairarapa United has played in the division one league with Naenae playing well above their standing on the competition table.
"They are a very improved side from what they were at the start of the year and any team which takes them for granted will be in for a shock," Keinzley said. "It took a lot of character and resolve for us to beat them???it was a good win to get."
