The fourth, and second last, round of the women's and men's Summer Cups was played at Carterton last Saturday, January 22, with good scoring in quite windy conditions.
In the ladies' event, Ngaire Taylor shaded Caral Rink for first place, on countback, with both players scoring 40 points.
Third place went to Honey Presow with 39 while Emma Wills took out fourth place with her 36 point score.
Bill Shakespeare led the men's field home with a very good 44 point score, just one clear of Peter Mallitte in second place.
Chris Connor was one point further adrift in third. Nigel Bain's 39 points was good enough for fourth place while three players - David Wills, Jeremy Ross and Steven Larsen - all scored 38 points, Steven being the player to miss out on a prize on countback.
The Marquis of Normanby Hotel Men's Nearest the Pin competition was won by Jeremy Ross while the "All Teed Up" balls went to Nigel Bain, for the men, and to Emma Wills, for the women.
Two players - Chris Connor and Pat Finn - achieved holes in two.
ANNIVERSARY DAY:
The annual Anniversary Day mini tournament was held on Monday, January 24, with a somewhat smaller field than usual. Perhaps the hot day was at least part of the reason for some people not playing.
Lesley Sadler won the women's event with a very good 43 point score, three better than Jeanne Taylor in second place. It was a further three points back to Caral Rink in third slot, with Emma Wills, on 35, and Lyn Andrews, on 34, completing the women's prize list.
The men's lower handicap group was won by George Rink with 40 points from Bill Dickson, with 38, David Sadler, 37, Lyn Evans, 36, and both Craig Wilson and John Lett, on 35.
In the higher handicap group Hugh Rolls returned to winning form with a 42 point score but was just one point clear of Steven Larsen in second place. Four players - Jim Juno, Peter Mallitte, Whana Rohe and Craig Miller - all achieved 39 point totals to complete the prize list in this division.
All three nearest the pin prizes were won by ladies. Emma Wills took the prize for number nine hole, but Jeanne Taylor showed her class by winning on both holes 12 and 15.
Perhaps not surprisingly, Jeanne also scored a hole in two as also did both Whana Rohe and Pat Finn.
VETERANS:
Although the competition may be unofficial the scoring in the veteran's Tuesday competition was high.
Jim Juno won the day with 44 points, but was only one point clear of Ron Lukies, in second place.
Three players - Arie van Zanten, Bill Shakespeare and Jim Douglas - all returned 41 point totals.
FOOTNOTE:
The first of the monthly "Friday fun" events was held last Friday.
The "Tombstone Golf" event was played.
In this event players carry a "tombstone" with them until they reach a hole on which they are unable to return a net par or better. When they fail they plant their "tombstone" in the vicinity of that particular green which provides amusement for all following golfers, both on that evening and during Saturday's play.
It was a good event, much enjoyed by those who played.
