The taxi industry has been inadequately monitored, leading to the risk of "unfit and improper" drivers, the Auditor-General says.
In 1997, the Office of the Auditor-General carried out a report on how the Land Transport Safety Authority assessed whether taxi drivers were "fit and proper" people.
Auditor-General Kevin Brady's follow-up report was tabled in Parliament yesterday.
He said he was concerned that little progress had been made since the 1997 report. Similar issues had emerged, particularly around controls on those entering the industry, monitoring and enforcing of compliance, and information sharing between agencies.
