"While we will continue to mourn, there is a lot of work to be done, and as Parekura would say, "mahia te mahi - get on with it".
"He has left big shoes to fill. But, I don't want to try and fill them. Nobody will ever replace Parekura. I have my own jandals to wear and a clear footprint to follow.
"I come from a hard-working whanau who know first-hand the struggles of life, and what it means to make ends meet.
"I am in touch with grass roots and understand central government politics. I am an easy going person, who relates well to all people. I am honest, hard-working and I care about our people.
"Given my political experience, extensive networks, understanding of the issues and iwi connections, I believe I am the best person to represent Labour at the Ikaroa Rawhiti by-election."
