A 21-year-old man was subjected to a "prolonged and terrifying" assault after being approached in the suburb of Newtown early on New Year's Day, police say, but despite his traumatic experience, he was able to give them a detailed description, and police today released an indentikit picture of the alleged offender.
Most distinctive on the face of the solidly-built Maori in his mid 20s to early 30s was a tattoo on his chin.
He was also wearing a green "50 Cent" rapper hooded sweatshirt, faded black baggy jeans and red and white sneakers, and was about 1.8m tall.
Male Survivors of Sexual Abuse Trust chairman Ken Clearwater today said it was difficult for men who were victims of sexual offences to report the crimes.
"The major problem is of course when most men don't come forward and disclose and then they are living with that for the rest of their lives -- it doesn't give them an opportunity to work on the healing of the hurt," he told One News.
Detective Sergeant Zane Smith of Wellington CIB said police wanted to speak to anyone who was in the Newtown shops area between 2am and 3.30am yesterday.
