Residents of the Waimea Plains in the Tasman region will face water rationing from Monday.
Tasman District Council dry weather taskforce convenor Robert Smith said the lack of rain meant river levels were continuing to fall.
Stage one rationing amounts to a 20 per cent cut in use of consented water take levels.
Mr Smith said it was likely stage two rationing, with a 35 per cent cut, would have to be implemented in the very near future.
