Trampers to Tutuwai Hut should notice a big lift to the hut's outer decor.
The 20-bunk hut, accessed from Waiohine Rd, was given a repaint thanks to the Dulux Protecting Our Place partnership with the Department of Conservation.
Department staff and volunteers from the Upper Hutt Walking and Tramping Club spent a weekend last month on the job, using Dulux Tanemahuta and Murupara colours.
DoC visitor assets ranger Craig Harrison, who managed the painting weekend, said: "It is great to have volunteers from the local community helping protect our huts. They have done a fine job. This hut is one of the Tararua favourites, and it's great to get this painting task completed."
Tarn Ridge and Carkeek Huts, also in the Tararuas, have also had paint makeovers. Tutuwai Hut is one of 973 huts managed by the DoC in New Zealand.
