Wairarapa were outclassed by Taranaki in their Hawke Cup qualifying round senior men's cricket match played at Rathkeale College over the weekend.
The visitors won by an innings and 34 runs after taking a stranglehold on the first day when after dismissing Wairarapa for a paltry 97 they raced through to 280-4 themselves before declaring, thanks in the main to an unbeaten 174 by skipper Tim Bruce.
His aggressive intent is shown by the fact he faced 123 balls and struck 18 fours and eight sixes.
Any prospect of Wairarapa scoring enough runs in their second innings to make Taranaki bat again soon went by the board. Again their top order batting failed to fire with the first two wickets falling at 25, the third at 26 and the fourth at 28. At 65-6 just managing to match their first innings total looked a longshot but an unbeaten 38 by Robbie Speers, helped by some useful resistance from the tail-enders, saw them eventually all out for 147. Speers faced 58 balls and hit three fours and a couple of sixes.
