A New Plymouth dairy has been snapped selling individual cigarettes to customers.
Taranaki District Health Board caught the dairy out during a test done to check dairies weren't selling cigarettes to underage people.
A regional health promoter Carly Twaddle says it's encouraging only one of the 17 tested retailers was caught selling cigarettes to a minor, but is dismayed another one thought it was okay to sell cigarettes on their own.
"It's really disappointing because kids have greater access to cigarettes if they can get them for a dollar each and we really don't want kids to have access, we're trying to reduce youth initiation smoking."
Retailers may face prosecution and a fine of up to $2000 for selling individual cigarettes.
