Governor-General Anand Satyanand will host a special commemoration tomorrow to thank community members who helped firefighters involved in the Hamilton Icepak Coolstore explosion two years ago.
Firefighter Derek Lovell was killed and seven others seriously hurt when leaked gas ignited, causing a massive explosion at the Tamahere site on April 5, 2008.
Dozens of people at a nearby school gala and a wedding rushed to help, while many others provided care and support in the days and months that followed.
The injured firefighters were now back at work, although two remained on light duties, and the time was right for the public's efforts to be commemorated, said National Fire Commander Mike Hall.
"Many people showed extraordinary courage in helping the firefighters to safety and providing first aid and comfort," he said.
"We wanted to find a way to make sure everyone involved at the time, and later, was properly acknowledged and aware they have the gratitude of the New Zealand Fire Service. So, with the support of the Tamahere community, the Governor-General consented to hold this special community commemoration."
The Governor-General will unveil a plaque outside the Tamahere Community Centre near a tree which was planted by members of the local community.
